The holly was a sacred plant among the Romans, evergreen and symbol of eternity, with its red berries represented the fertility of the land after the darkness of winter, a promise of light and heat.
Garlands of the plant, adorned all the doors of the houses of the Romans during the holidays of Saturnalia, to honor Saturn, gods of the earth, the alternation of the seasons, welfare, abundance and richness, whose temple in the Capitol, still today visible through the eight remaining columns, guarded the aerarium, the public treasury (gold, coins).
The recurrence of Saturnalia had heard a lot of sense, coincided with the winter solstice (17- December 23 of each year), marking the transition between the old and the new year, between the sun is dying and the new that has to “resurrect”.
It was the largest religious recurrence of antiquity, widespread throughout the Empire and heartfelt by people from all social conditions, of where gifts were exchanged (called strenne ) and abolished the social distances, suspended laws and standards.
From symbol of Saturnalia ,the holly plant became also a symbol of the Christian recurrence of Christmas and New Year and is given on such occasions to wish happiness and well-being.
